Why MTB Marathon Coaching Makes the Difference

MTB marathons place unique demands on both rider and bike. Long climbs, technical descents, repeated high-intensity efforts and hours of rough terrain require more than general cycling fitness. Personalised coaching prepares you for the specific physical and technical challenges of endurance mountain bike racing.

Train for the Demands of Off-Road Racing

Every MTB marathon presents different challenges, from steep climbs and technical singletrack to fast fire roads and rocky descents. Your programme is tailored to the terrain, elevation and demands of your target event.

Build Endurance Without Losing Power

Success in MTB marathons requires the ability to produce repeated efforts while staying strong for several hours. Your training develops aerobic endurance, climbing strength and the repeatable power needed to handle changing terrain throughout the race.

Develop Technical Confidence

Fitness alone doesn't win mountain bike races. Coaching also considers the technical demands of your events, helping you integrate skills practice alongside your physical training so you ride smoother, descend with confidence and conserve energy.

Race Smarter with Better Pacing and Nutrition

Many riders lose time through poor pacing or inadequate fuelling. Your coaching includes guidance on pacing strategy, nutrition, hydration and recovery so you can maintain performance from the start line to the finish.

Endurance Athletes Coached by Enduraprep

From first-time MTB marathon riders to experienced endurance athletes, Enduraprep provides personalised coaching to help riders build fitness, improve technical confidence and perform at their best in demanding off-road events.

“I had Lawrence from Enduraprep coach me for Ironman Wales and I couldn’t recommend him enough. He updated my training plan regularly and adjusted it whenever needed. The training program helped me reach my goal of becoming an Ironman.”

— Rhys H.

“After signing up for Ironman Wales I quickly realised I had no idea how to train for such an event. A quick call with Lawrence eased my nerves and he designed a clear training plan. After four months of coaching I conquered the dragon and became an Ironman.”

— Christopher Y.

“I entered Ironman Wales with no triathlon experience. After a year of coaching I managed to complete the race and even do other triathlons along the way. The training was built around my schedule and the regular feedback really helped build confidence.”

— Pippa W.

“I worked with Lawrence at Enduraprep this year with the aim of completing Ironman Wales. The workouts were easy to follow and pitched at the right level for my fitness. I was able to complete Ironman Wales in my target time and finished the run strongly, which is definitely due to the training programme Lawrence had created.”

— Tom W.

MTB Marathon Coaching – Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from mountain bikers considering personalised coaching for MTB marathons, XCM races and endurance off-road events.

Do I need previous MTB marathon racing experience?
No. MTB marathon coaching can work for riders preparing for their first endurance mountain bike event as well as experienced racers targeting faster times, age-group results or podium positions. Your programme is built around your current fitness, technical ability, riding background and target event.
How does online MTB marathon coaching work?
Your training programme is delivered through TrainingPeaks and built around your target race, available terrain, equipment and weekly schedule. With Performance Coaching, your sessions are reviewed regularly, feedback is provided and your programme is adjusted as your fitness, recovery and circumstances change. With the Guided Plan, you receive a personalised four-week programme and video guidance without ongoing workout-by-workout feedback.
Do I need a power meter on my mountain bike?
No. A power meter can be useful, particularly for pacing climbs and monitoring training load, but it is not essential. Sessions can be prescribed using power, heart rate, perceived effort, duration or a combination of methods. Indoor trainer and road-bike data can also be used alongside your off-road riding.
Can you help with technical MTB skills?
Coaching cannot replace in-person technical instruction, but your programme can include structured skills practice, technical riding sessions and guidance on integrating descending, cornering, climbing and handling work into your preparation. Where appropriate, working with a qualified local MTB skills coach may also be recommended.
Can I combine road, indoor and mountain bike training?
Yes. Most MTB marathon riders use a combination of mountain bike, road-bike and indoor sessions. Road and indoor training can provide controlled endurance and interval work, while MTB sessions develop event-specific fitness, handling skills and confidence on technical terrain.
Will my training be tailored to my target event?
Yes. Your programme considers the race distance, expected duration, elevation, altitude, terrain, technical difficulty and likely conditions. Training can then be adapted to prepare you for the specific climbing, descending, pacing and fuelling demands of your event.
Can coaching fit around work and family commitments?
Yes. Your programme is built around the time you realistically have available. Key endurance, intensity and technical sessions are prioritised so your training remains consistent and productive without requiring an unrealistic weekly schedule.
Will I receive advice on pacing and nutrition?
Yes. MTB marathon performance depends heavily on pacing, fuelling and hydration. Coaching includes guidance on managing effort across long climbs and technical terrain, practising your race nutrition strategy and preparing for the demands of event day.
Can I book a consultation before committing?
Yes. A free, no-obligation consultation allows us to discuss your riding background, target event, current training, available terrain and weekly schedule. We can then determine whether Performance Coaching or the Guided Plan is the better fit.
